The IATP access site conducted mobile training entitled “Internet Resources for School Administrators” for the directors of secondary schools in Pryluky, Chernihiv region. The participants mastered skills on Internet usage in their work. This was the second mobile training, conducted by the IATP access site for this audience.

The librarians from Chernihiv as well as from other cities of Ukraine participated in the chat with members of the Ukrainian Library Association Presidium.

English club continues its activity. Other four meetings took place in the IATP access site. The FLEX alumna Lidia Hrapach led the first meeting devoted to the public speaking skills. At the second meeting the participants discussed the film “Matrix.” The FLEX alumnus Yuriy Tkach conducted the course of American Studies at the third meeting.

More than 200 students of Chernihiv Law College got opportunity to work on the Internet during trainings on Internet basics in the IATP access site in Chernihiv. The participants learned to work with browser, and opened their own e-mail accounts.

English club continues its activity. Three meetings already took place in the IATP access site. First meeting was led by FLEX alumna Lidia Khrapach, and was devoted to mastering public speaking skills. Second meeting was devoted to the Movie night and Discussion club, where the film “Meet Joe Black” was discussed. At the third meeting the participants started learning the course entitled “American Studies”, which were leading by FLEX alumnus Yuriy Tkach.

Peace Corps volunteer Janice McInerney led meeting of the Journalist Club in the IATP access site. The club was organized to encourage local high school students to work with computer and the Internet for preparing new issue of the English-language newspaper “The Sofa” for pupils. The club is run on a monthly basis.

The IATP access site conducted a seminar entitled “Internet Resources for Students-Psychologists” to teach Internet basics to students, and to introduce them to the websites devoted to the psychology issues. More than 30 future teachers made their first steps towards mastering Internet skills.

Five representatives of the Economic Department of City Administration participated in the seminar entitled “Internet for Government Officials.” CI alumnus Valeriy Kokot conducted the seminar. The participants learned how to work with search engines, and opened e-mail accounts.

ECA alumni from Chernihiv and other cities of Ukraine participated in a chat entitled "Human Rights Convention - the Constitution of Europe." The IATP Chernihiv Representative Yuriy Usovich moderated the chat. The participants discussed different human rights issues in Ukraine and in the Great Britain with two professors of Queens University: David O'Mahony, Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Stephen Livingstone, Professor of Human Rights Law, Queens University Belfast, and Ukrainian expert - Valeriy Ryabukha, Senior Lecturer for Chernihiv Law College of the Penitentiary Department of Ukraine.

The IATP access site hosted a seminar entitled “Internet Resources for Teachers of Literature” for 14 teachers. The participants learned Internet basics, opened e-mail accounts, and visited the websites on teaching literature.

Karina Tatenko (CI 03) conducted a seminar entitled “Internet for Medical Workers.” The participants of the seminar mastered skills on the Internet basics, and visited Internet resources on medicine.

Six ECA alumni gathered in the IATP access site to discuss running English Club in Chernihiv. At the meeting they also discussed the experience of the ECA alumni from Luhansk, who had created the similar club in their city. The IATP Representative in Chernihiv Yuriy Usovich told to Chernihiv alumni about his visit to the IATP access site in Luhansk, where he had got acquainted with work of the English Club in Luhansk.

The IATP Cgernihiv Trainer Lyudmyla Sushko conducted mobile training on the Internet resources for teachers in Priluky, Chernihiv oblast, for 20 history teachers. Such trainings will be conducted on the monthly basis. The event was organized in cooperation with the IATP Virtual Center in Chernihiv.

With in the frameworks of Step-by-Step training the IATP access site conducted a seminar entitled “Local Networks” for 12 employees of the Chernihiv Sanitary Epidemiological State Service. All of them were very impressed by the perspectives of the work in the networks. As one of the participants told: “IATP is opening a new age in our minds.”

The IATP access site conducted a seminar entitled “Internet for Teachers of Physics” for the schoolteachers. It was unique opportunity for the teachers of physics to get acquainted with Internet and its services for further application at their lessons.

Twelve students of local universities participated in the third of four classes of Volunteer School, which was conducted by the IATP access site. This session was devoted to investigating of the peculiarities of search engines.

CI alumnus Valeriy Ryabuha, Senior Lecturer for Chernihiv Law College of the Penitentiary Department of Ukraine, initiated the community Internet club. He will run it twice a month for the students of his college and other interested people. The main goal of the club is to give participants IT knowledge.

The IATP access site conducted a seminar “Internet as a Part of the Library Services” for school librarians. Within two hours the participants got an opportunity to get acquainted with Internet and its services for further usage in their work.

Twelve students of several universities of Chernihiv participated in the second of four classes of Volunteer School, which was conducted by IATP access site. This session was devoted to investigating of the peculiarities of MS WORD.

The local NGO initiated an environmental Internet club “Flower” for the NGO members and their children. The classes are to be conducted twice a month. The first one was conducted this week, October 13, where they mastered basics of IE browser and found necessary resources in Internet.

The Step-by-Step training course "My Automated Working Place" for epidemiologists, which was scheduled with Karina Tatenko (CI 02), head of the Occupational Hygiene department of the Sanitary Epidemiological State Service of Chernihiv region, started. Ten representatives of this department attended the training. They started their classes from standard computer basics course. At the other trainings they will learn computer network, e-mail usage, and communication in the net. At the end of the course they will have national chat with their colleagues form other cities of Ukraine.

Svyatoslav Kostirko, PIE alumnus, in cooperation with Scientific Methodological center conducted seminar for teachers - psychologists "Psychological Tools in the Internet". Within two hours they got acquainted with IE and main principle of work on the NET. After the seminar teachers expressed their wish to continue further studying and to participate in regular IATP courses.

Ten students of several Universities of Chernihiv participated in the first of four classes of Volunteer School, which was conducted by IATP Center. This was second session of the School. Conduction of this School is joint initiative of IATP and group of ECA alumni from nationally famous NGO - AHALAR Center. First School was conducted this spring. And majority of former participants continued applying their knowledge of PC and Internet in local NGO. This fall session of the School is devoted to mastering MS Office applications and Internet features. Good luck, newcomers!

Tatyana Potapenko (Americans for the Democracy in Ukraine 94) conducted the second seminar "Web Resources for the Teachers of English" for another 20 students of Chernihiv State University and teachers of English. All participants got basic skills of surfing on the net and list of resources for studying English on the web. This is the second and the last of two seminars, which she planned to conduct for the October 2003.

Alumna Tetiana Potapenko (Americans for the Democracy in Ukraine 94) conducted the seminar "Web Resources for English Teachers" for 17 students of Chernihiv State University and teachers of English. All participants got basic skills of surfing on the net and list of resources for studying English on the web. This was the first of two seminars, which were planned by Tetiana for the October.

A presentation of the Muskie/FSA Fellowship Program for ECA alumni of Chernihiv took place at local IATP access site. This presentation was joint initiative of American Council and IATP. Alumni of different programs - CI, FLEX and others took an advantage of this opportunity and asked questions of importance regarding this program. Both alumni and American Council representatives were satisfied with this opportunity.

The executives of Chernihiv Central Library System participated in the national chat with Vice-Minister of Culture - Vasyl Romanchyshyn. Nina Vlasenko, Head Deputy Chernihiv Central Library System, took the floor to share their concerns on different issues of importance to their daily work. Participants asked questions to the Deputy-Ministry and what was more important - got answers. Moreover, participants decided to work further and set the date of the next virtual meeting with National Parliament Library representatives

The ECA alumni and local NGO representatives attended the seminar entitled "Site promotion in the Internet" in the IATP access site. The training was conducted for the users who already had developed their sites and pages and used the service of hosting suggested by IATP. The IATP Web Developer Rostislav Malenko brilliantly coped with the task of equipping the participants with necessary skills for further promotion of their websites. Deep thanks to him expressed CC alumna Nataliya Gritsuk who has just developed her personal web page (this particular day that seminar was conducted) and she welcomed new opportunities.

À seminar for teachers "Using Internet Technologies at the Information Science Lessons" took place at the IATP site. This seminar was joint initiative of Chernihiv Virtual Center and the IATP site. More than 20 teachers had a chance to get acquainted with PC and Internet technologies. They opened e-mail accounts and mastered skills of information search using different search engines. Some of the teachers had no chance to work with PC before.

The ECA alumni - Lidióa Hrapach (FLEX 03), Anatoliy Gavro (Americans for Democracy in Ukraine 94) and Valeriy Ryabuha (CI 01) - took part in the chat "Consequences of the September 11 Terrorist Attack in the United States and its Impact on the US Foreign Policy and World Policy, Culture and Economics." They posed the questions and shared the opinions with US Embassy guests and with other participants.

The Head of the City Department of Culture, the librarians and the Representative of the Virtual Center took part in a chat with the Cultural Affaires Officer. The event was devoted to the Independence Day of Ukraine. The participants discussed the situation in the cultural sphere in Ukraine, the achievements for the 12 years of the independence. The participants were impressed by the level of communication and by the opportunity to pose questions and receive the answers immediately through Internet.

One more chat of the FSAU finalists took place. During the chat the FSAU alumni shared their experience with the finalists. Maria Yukhimenko and Natalia Zheleznova were very appreciated for this opportunity to receive such knowledge.

Maria Yukhimenko, a finalist of the FSAU program, attended the Pre-Departure training in the IATP access site. During the training Maria learned to work with browser and created an e-mail box. At the end of the training Maria was chatted with other finalists.

This month Valeriy Riabukha (CI 00) conducted his regular courses on Internet basics for the students of the Law School. During the trainings he acquainted the students with the main principals of work in the Internet. Some of the participants of these trainings became the active users of the IATP access site.

05-06.2003

During two months the students and the employees of the social sphere attended the trainings on computer and Internet basics and on Internet search. The students of the Law School and the consultants of the Law Clinic were the most active participants; they used their knowledge for improving the effectiveness of their work with clients. This project was the first common initiative of the IATP access site and the alumni of the Community Connections Program.

The employees of the City Department of Culture attended a seminar "The Skills of Work in MS Word." The participants had an opportunity to improve their skills of work with text editors and to learn new ways of work. The participants mentioned that this seminar helped to fill their duties faster.

The PIE alumni attended a seminar entitled "Communication through the Internet." The participants learned to use such programs as: ICQ, Mirc, Net Meeting and others. Also the alumni had an opportunity to communicate in the thematic chats.

Anatoliy havro and Tetiana Potapenko, alumni of the Americans for the Democracy in Ukraine (1994), conducted a seminar entitled "The Resources of English in the Internet" for English teachers of the region. During the seminar participants familiarized themselves with browser Internet Explorer and visited a lot of resources which would be useful in preparing English lessons.

Several students of Chernihiv schools and their teachers participated in the Kidlink chat. Adults chatted in one room, children in the other. Adults discussed ways of better using of the Kidlink project opportunities, and discussed the ideas directly with the founder of the project Odd de Presno (Norway). And kids enjoyed the opportunity of communication with their peers from other cities.

Valeriy Ryabukha conducted one more class for the new group of students from Law College. During the classes they were introduced to main principles of work with Internet, got acquainted with principles of work with www and other Internet services. Some of students became regular visitors of IATP.

Special meeting of alumni devoted to presentation of State Exchange site took place at the IATP center. The resources of this site were upfolded to alumni. Of special interest were grants sections and those devoted to fellowships, job opportunities. Some of alumni subscribed to alumni e-list to get fresh info immediately to their mail boxes.

Head of the City Department of Culture and librarians participated in the chat with Minister of Culture and his deputies. They discussed the situation in the cultural sphere in Ukraine, topics of importance for librarians and critical issues of salaries, etc. Participants were rather impressed by the level of communication and opportunity itself to ask and get questions immediately, provided by Internet.

Three participants of "Nova Doba" - local team of national NGO - participated in virtual conference with other teams from the cities of Ukraine. They discussed different educational issues and topics of professional importance.

Valeriy Ryabukha and his students of Law college conducted two classes devoted to the learning of peculiarities of different search engines. They visited both Russian and foreign engines, such as Google, Yandex, Rambler, Meta, Dogpile, etc.

Valeriy answered the questions of interested participants regarding the structure of the site, international part of his project, and some other.

Victoria Solonitsina, CC alumna, conducted the seminar "Savoir Vivrue - the Language of the Ethics" for members of local public organizations. About 15 persons participated in the event and were highly impressed by the material presented. And expressed their wish to participate in more events on the topic.

Alena Klimenko, PIE alumna, conducted presentation of Kidlink project for teachers of several schools from Chernihiv. As the result teachers form three schools introduced the project to their students, and now they actively participate in a variety of activities. Presently Alena also moderates a few Kidlink mailing lists, which is her voluntary contribution to the project.

A Chat “Self-education of Pupils” took place. Schoolteachers of social disciplines participated in the event. Participants discussed such issues: how to prepare pupils to self-education, how to stimulate self-education. It was already the second chat on this subject.

The last seminar of the training course “Internet Basics” took place. Valeriy Ryabukha are going to teach trainers among Law School students, who would teach their classmates the basics of Internet.

Trainer of IATP Center Ludmila Sushko assisted him in mastering peculiarities of chat program.
